THE STORY OF SAPPHIRES
Sapphires are amongst our most favourite gemstones here at Politia Jewelry. Maybe it is because sapphire has always been associated with the colour blue, and here in Cyprus we are lucky to be surrounded by clear blue skies and seas, a constant source of inspiration. The name sapphire is also derived from the Greek word 'sappheiros'.
What is a sapphire?
Formed over millions of years sapphires have been found around the world with Sri Lanka being the source of the famous 'Ceylon' stone set in the engagement ring originally given to Princess Diana by Prince Charles, and now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge. Sapphire gemstones belong to the Corundum mineral type along with Ruby. As defined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) a sapphire 'can be a pure blue but ranges from greenish blue to a violet blue. The name “sapphire” can also apply to any corundum that’s not red and doesn’t qualify as ruby'.
Sapphire Colours
Some other sapphire colours are green, yellow, orange, pink, and purple. These colours are less widely available and are perfect for jewelry addicts looking for something a little more unusual. We like to include both traditional blue and some of these other 'fancy' sapphire colours in our collections.
Politia Sapphire Jewelry
One of our most popular designs is our open sapphire ring available in different colour and metal options.
Our earrings collection features lots of sapphires too. We have designed our own unique range of Bezel Studs, Chain Drop Earrings and on trend 'huggies', all sure to appeal to sapphire fans.
